Capturing a moment

Today I had the pleasure of photographing a woman, who celebrating a special birthday this year wanted to capture herself at this moment. She is dancer of middle eastern dance which she discovered later in life, she also enjoys travelling and on these travels has collected many pieces of middle eastern dance costumes, not expensive high end pieces but each piece spoke to her. During the session, each costume was tried on and photographed, portraits as well as the details of beadwork, the sequins, as we worked through each costume, the story of how each piece was acquired, the location of purchase, who it was from was told. Each story was told with such enthusiasm and emotion, every detail was remembered. Although, as she said she may not dance in each outfit, each one holds a special place in her heart and she wanted to capture this part of her life.

I have yet to even start editing the images I captured today, my children needed me, that’s tomorrow’s job, I hope I can portray the sentiment shared during today’s session.

Decisions, decisions

So many to make, but one that I would like to share with you. I have a website capturethismoment.org, which is all right, but it doesn’t quite work. Firstly,  you have to be online to even access the edit section, so I am restricted when I can update, here I can happily create a post or a page anywhere on a mobile device and simply publish when I have wifi. A great bonus, when like me you spend a lot of time waiting, especially waiting for children. Fabulous, definitely a pro. Secondly, I can publicise it straight away , no copy and paste of URLs, another bonus.  I suppose another thing to consider, my website well the galleries just do not work on a mobile device, this one does.

I have certainly had a lot more visitors to this blog than my website over the last week or so, but still I am dithering whether to transfer my domain over. Not really sure why, I suppose my doubts are will people still want to commission me for photographic work if I am blogging about when I do my ironing or the school run, makes me more human for sure. The blog will give me a place to share photographs I take when I am playing with different lenses or learning new techniques, something I felt never really fitted in with my other site. I certainly do not want two sites to update, so I need to make that decision. As I work through my decision making process,I am now thinking how I share the work that I have been commission to do.  I use Zenfolio, to create all my client galleries and invite visitors direct from that, I can post links to photographs captured at events direct to Facebook, Twitter from there also. The online shop has never had a sale, and there are other avenues in which I can sell products through which would reach a far greater audience than I could ever hope to. I suppose another thing to consider, my website just doesn’t work on a mobile device, this one does

Still deciding, can anyone out there help me!

Out with old continues….

Today, I have continued with my quest to clear out the old, swimming first thing, it is sort of out with the old! Old me, trying to shed a few pounds and get a bit fitter, 60 lengths is a respectable stint in the pool when you haven’t been for maybe six or even more weeks! I think a session is needed at the end of the week.

Home, quick coffee and then I attacked my wardrobe! Quite shocking, the age of some of my clothes, the college sweatshirt that will be 20 years old this year, the dress I wore to the ball in my final year at uni! Some have gone back into the wardrobe, I am quite sentimental really, a lot more was bagged up ready to take to the Stock Exchange tomorrow to be sold, some to the charity shop, pretty good. Now have nothing to wear!

Afterwards, I decided I really need to start going through all the images that are currently on my computer, last count over 23,000, a lot have been copied to a portable hard drive, others to dvd, others to online storage but others nothing has been done to them. Not even looked at properly, sad, I know, but sometimes I think photographers can sometimes run out of time to edit their holiday photographs, or the ones of the children running in the park. So my plan is to create a few photo books of our holidays, time spent together so that we can relive those adventures together as a family.  Included in this are few from a walk I went on with my children before Christmas, which I think deserve to seen by others and not just by me. Enjoy.

In the woods with a Lensbaby

A perfect Sunday some might say, a walk in the woods with friends, a lovely lunch, good wine, excellent company and the opportunity to take some photographs. So here are some images captured with my Lensbaby composer. Enjoy.

A productive morning

Today was a day of enforced stay at home, a delivery was booked for sometime during the hours of 7am and 2pm. With this in mind I decided to book an online grocery slot, hey if you got to stay in why not make it for more than one delivery. With this enforced stay at home a morning in the kitchen was planned. I enjoy cooking and make most of our meals from scratch, goodies for the children’s lunch boxes were needed for the following week, usually done on a Saturday or a Sunday but other plans for the weekend would prevent me from doing this.

So to make good use of this time a morning in the kitchen, first up cranberry and white chocolate cookies a recipe adapted from a can of condensed milk. The condensed milk included in these cookies helps to keep them moist and chewy and are a big hit with the gang. Next stem gingernuts, lovely lots of ginger again a big hit with everyone and a great treat in the lunch box. I also got some spicy squash soup on in the slow cooker. My slow cooker is used so much especially with the unpredictable nature of Mr G and his return from work. So tonight’s meal was on and cooking away slowly we need something to go with it. Stromboli I think would go well, so some white bread dough is knocked up and left to prove ready to be transformed later.

Some puff pastry was found, sausage meat arrived in the grocery shop and hey presto sausage rolls, super happy gang members next week.

Finished the morning in the kitchen with a frothy Freddie, a what I hear you say. It is favourite with my two. Dissolve a jelly in a quarter of a pint of water, whisk up a can of evaporated milk add jelly and leave to set. Sometimes I add some mini marshmallows or raspberries, yummy!

Daylight ironing

Daylight ironing doesn’t happen very often it’s a bit like daylight reading I never seem to get round to doing it. Today I was on a roll, beds changed, bathrooms cleaned, floors hoovered and mopped, well apart from my son’s room.

This best describes his room. The top of the stairs didn’t get much of a clean either I have a small Lego city there complete with a train track, this will be tackled when I enter the danger zone. Upstairs done, downstairs had a quick going over before a little bit of cooking a couple batches of bread dough made and left to prove. Pastry made for tonights meal and the toppings prepared. All done before lunch, wow definitely need a sit down. Quick lunch with Mr G where we put the world to rights, talked about summer holidays and plans for the weekend. Hey its still only 1pm there is ironing which needs doing and I could do it whilst watching tv. Bit of a plan I think, no editing to get done, so ironing board out, iron switch on, greys anatomy in the DVD player. Fab ironing whilst watching McDreamy and McSteamy. Even managed to get the ironing completed and watch the last 10 minutes sitting on the sofa.

And in case you are wondering how the bread and tarts came out here is a peek just for you.

Why, hello motivation, welcome back

Saturday saw the first portrait session of the year. I must admit I wasn’t particularly motivated, not sure why, the clients are lovely, friendly and were an extended family including four generations. Perhaps, I had had too long Off over the Christmas period, or perhaps I had done far too many portraits prior to Christmas, whether the reason, I was lacking the get and go needed to photograph.

Saturday afternoon arrived, I rushed home from my daughters dance lessons, fed us both, waited for the return of Mr G before heading out with car loaded with my portable studio. I asked the clients to hire a local hall, too many to fit in mine or their home which is normally where I work.

Set up lights and the white backdrop, and we started. The shoot lasted for 2 hours and included lots and lots of group, family groups, cousins, siblings, generation, you name it we did it. The props from little retreats were put to good use and I think at the end of the day, everyone enjoyed the session, I know I am motivated once more. Yay!

Goods in, goods out or not

Nope I am not a warehouse distribution manager, just someone who works from home, with a husband, who when not travelling also works from home. Today I planned to edit the images from Saturday’s portrait session, so after the school run, answering emails, catching up on Facebook etc, I thought I would get down to work. The call for more coffee came first, and then the a quick phone call to my Mum (never really quick, the phone died after 22 minutes, the call was finished on the mobile!). I then provided a traffic update for Mr G who was stuck on some motorway and not getting anyway fast, with these tasks complete, I think right lets get down to work, however a bit more distraction, Mum is going to France for the first couple weeks of the summer holidays – can I get a cheap flight to visit them? It would appear yes, oo I think to myself that would be lovely, a few days with the gang in France, wine, good food, lovely jubley! Still, this is not getting the editing done, nor is writing a blog and trying to be good about keeping it updated! Opps I have digressed again! About to start on the aforementioned editing, when , bless him, Mr G calls, “I haven’t got some equipment I need for tomorrow with me!” Yes I can get it ship, yes no problem, yes I am wonderful, yes you are very lucky to have me. Well it is not a straight forward thing this goods out business, first measure said box, weight it, visit appropriate website, look at all the options, collect today – yes, deliver tomorrow, yes, pay – yes, print labels, stick labels to box, secure box, wait for man. Door bell goes ten minutes after all of this, its a man with a van fab I think to myself, downstairs I go, no its goods in and not for me (I know I like to shop online but there has been a lot less of in with the new just recently). So back up I go to my workspace, just about settle down to the editing when the door bell goes again – good exercise this running up and down stairs, another man in a van, can you take a parcel in for next door. Back up I go to the editing, which to be truthful is looking so unlikely to get done today, get lightroom open, start flagging possibles when yes the door bell rings again, more goods in. So you see lots of goods in but no goods out.

A post which includes some photography at last….

Sundays are great aren’t they? I like Sundays, yesterday was a lovely one, a couple things planned, all nice. Bit of shopping, lunch out followed by a walk at Clifton Down to visit both the bridge and the camera obscura. Lovely.

So shopping was completed quite painlessly especially with the children in tow. Lunch next, we decided to book a table at Brasserie Blanc in Bristol. The building was amazing dating 1754 with original features to wow over. Shown to our table upstairs we selected from the menu. Both Mr G and I went for set menu, 3 courses for £14 bargain. Han was hoping that mussels and chips were on the menu, as luck would have it a half portion was available, she was chuffed to bits. E has pleased to be allowed an adult’s sausage and mash, the olives were excellent, as was the garlic mayo, tapenade, balsamic and olive oil served with bread. The smoked croquets were crunchy and tasty. This was followed by a smoked haddock risotto which was perfect. Treacle tart completed the meal, yummy and well worth the money. Will be visiting there again for sure.

Following lunch we decided to visit Clifton Down, mainly to visit the camera obscura and the bridge. However by the time we drove from the city centre, parked the car, walk the short distance to camera to find it was closing, yes closing, this was the second time trying to visit each time we arrived too late.

A walk across the bridge, to take in the view completed the day.

The School Run

Things were going well this morning despite the children’s alarm clocks not going off, not sure if the human version of their alarm clocks went down well. A rendition of a One direction song for my seven year, well it made her smile, not sure if it was appreciated by anyone else in the house but she got up very perky this morning (doesn’t happen that often, she likes to sleep! I often point out to her that I like sleep too and would given a chance like a little bit more every now and then but hey I can’t have everything).

The ten year old was perhaps less happy with the beep beep beep I choose for him, so a grumpy boy made his way to breakfast. Breakfast went off well, no moaning about what was on offer, everyone ate and went to get washed and dressed, fabulous, all going well. Lunch boxes prepared, school bags packed everyone, wash, dress and ready by the allotted time.

Great I hear you say, well it was a little frosty this morning, Mr G being lovely, scraped the car for me before disappearing for a couple days. Then it went a little tits up. By the time we leave, the car had iced up again, I had not allowed anytime for this, I have to be in two different places at the same time. So like a mad man, I scrape the ice, only to find inside is so misted up we won’t be going any way for a minute or two, we are now 4 minutes behind schedule, a lot when you are working to a bit of tight schedule for the school run, seven year old is moaning about a lack of leg room in the back, ten year old is moaning about a lack of leg room in the front. Ahh I forgot to rebuild the car after carting all my gear on Saturday, so quickly I get in the back of the car adjust the seating to give everyone their allocated leg room, we are now 6 minutes behind. Finally I can see enough to drive, so we make our way to school, driving pass my daughters to get to my son’s school, can I drop her with anyone, nope , none of her friends are there yet – looks like both are going to be late. We had been doing so well, both children making it to school time, most of the time. We turn into the main road, always a bit dodgy, cars parked everywhere, can’t see up the hill you have to just go for it. Made it up in one piece, have right of way going up the hill. Double hand wave to a couple of Mum’s as we head down hill to my son’s school, decide to kick him out at the front rather the side, so that he is not too late for school, but we have a ditherer in front of us, this is not helping. We are now late for number one drop off, have less than 2 minutes to make it back home to drop off the car, to walk number two to school. Quickly we go round the housing estate, make it back onto the main road, up the hill to go down the hill, this where it goes all wrong. We don’t have right of way, cars are parked on our side of the road, lots of traffic coming up the hill. We are stuck! We make our way slowly down the hill pulling in at every gap to allow traffic up the hill. Three minutes late for number two, finally made it to the turning, have to go up on the pavement to get pass cars, thinking great I can kick Han out here, but no she is in the back of the car, I have three doors can’t get her out without getting out of the car, cars are now behind me, so we head off home, to park the car. Park car, grab stuff, run to school and hey we made in time to tag onto the end of the line. Number two on time!
